In Hamamatsu, Japan, design studio moss. has completed the new office of concrete surveying and civil engineering company AXIS. The minimalist, stripped-back workplace is crafted to embody precision, reliability, and groundedness. “Since the client’s work involves concrete inspections and geological surveys, the design draws inspiration from the earth, strata, and the presence, color, and materiality of sand,” says moss. “We want the entire space to convey the spirit inherent in surveying and investigation—reading the land and connecting it to the future.”
Nearly 3,400 square feet, the AXIS office is characterized by layers and edges of particleboard colored with natural stains to evoke the hues of concrete and rock strata. Concrete and metal are wrapped in white alongside restrained hues that convey clarity and calm. At the core of the interior, a large table and benches compose a soft, architectural mass both functional and symbolic.
