Carlo Ratti Associati has completed the renovation of offices inside Palazzo Mondadori, a hallmark in the catalog of work by Brazilian master Oscar Niemeyer, in Milan. Home to the Mondadori Group publishing house since 1975, the radical redesign is executed through a lens of identity and coherence that enhances the building with respect to its distinctive character. Across more than 215,000 square feet, the historic site receives a contemporary facelift with optimized energy solutions and more open-plan spaces to foster collaboration in a “playground workspace.”
Original modular furniture from USM Haller is reconfigured across the refreshed office in a demonstration of its improved versatility. An abundance of wood as well as recycled and natural materials also serve as a backdrop for Italian design objects to stand out. Fluid interiors are richly endowed with greenery as well to establish a clearer dialogue between the workplace and the surrounding landscape. “To break out of the comfort zone of Zoom calls, we need to redesign the office as a space that, so to speak, is worth the journey—ça vaut le voyage,” says Carlo Ratti, founding partner of Carlo Ratti Associati. “The result? A catalog of environments—from open to more intimate—where everyone can find their comfort zone and where collaboration and innovation can truly flourish.”
