Salt Lake City-based interior designer Emily Thurman has unveiled her first commercial project—a 20,000-square-foot office spanning the eighth floor of a high-rise in the Utah capital. Designed for one of the leading developers in the state alongside VY Architecture and 7D8, the concept is richly layered to elevate the corporate aesthetic through an homage to the natural landscapes and community spirit of Utah. “Everything about the Utah environment was brought inside,” says Thurman. “They were turned off by anything that felt too trendy or overly polished. They wanted grit, honesty, and a reflection of the land they were building on.”
Earth tones of sage, burgundy, and beige channel the desert with support from wood grain surfaces and soft leather upholstery. Artwork also contributes to the ambiance with pieces by local artists including a charcoal drawing of native buffalo. An open lounge anchors the design as a central point of gathering, flanked by semi-private alcoves. Comfortable seating and tables—including a coffee table designed by Thurman—position the space for informal exchange. In addition to six conference rooms, a pair of huddle rooms, and multiple custom workstations, 23 private offices tout solid wood veneer casework installed with versatility in mind. “We had to design for change,” says Thurman. “Each office was custom-built for its occupant, but with the understanding that it would evolve as the company grows.”
Bespoke cherry conference tables stretching more than seven feet in width stand out among Thurman’s custom creations. Locally based makers were tapped to help craft custom seating as well for a cohesive and distinctive corporate visual presence. “Everything was designed to age beautifully, using materials that would patina over time, not wear out,” Thurman adds. “The goal was always the same: to make the most honest choices for this client, this team, and this place.”
