Ecommerce design mecca Etsy has launched a new international office in Mexico City with a design by Gensler inspired by the region’s rich and colorful cultural heritage. The workplace integrates local craftsmanship into the contemporary concept, drawing influence from the architecture of Pritzker Prize-winner Luis Barragan, Mexican muralism, and traditional textiles to embody an ethos of identity and belonging. “These references informed not only the aesthetic language, but also the spatial narrative of the office, conceived as a ‘workplace woven with tradition,’” says Gensler design director Francesca Poma-Murialdo. “The goal was for people to feel a strong sense of belonging, warmth, and creative energy—a workplace that feels human rather than corporate.”

Totalling nearly 16,000 square feet, the Etsy office embraces tradition by embedding cultural narratives in the form of custom furniture, ceramics, textiles, and carpentry. The regionally made and sourced elements lower the project’s overall carbon footprint as well. Interiors flow from collaborative public areas into focused zones through a colorful central thoroughfare. Interconnected staircases enhance vertical connectivity and foster community across levels, while a range of diverse spaces accommodate neurodiversity and modes of focus and collaboration. “The office also differentiates itself by framing the workplace as a cultural and social platform, not just a functional environment,” Poma-Murialdo adds. “the project sets a benchmark in CDMX for how commercial interiors can bridge global vision and local identity, supporting employee well-being, strengthening brand authenticity, and actively contributing to the local creative economy—positioning design as a driver of cultural and social impact, not just efficiency.”
