The LEGO Group has unveiled its first dedicated global manufacturing campus near the company’s headquarters in Billund, Denmark. Crafted by Danish architecture studio Cubo, the Kornmarken Campus accommodates nearly 1,800 LEGO employees across a concrete and mass-timber structure spanning more than 500,000 square feet. Oversized LEGO blocks are even integrated into the design to amplify brand identity.
Conceived to inspire collaboration, learning, and wellbeing, the facility comprises shared workspaces and facilities fashioned to reflect LEGO’s values and respect for craftsmanship. Campus employees will oversee the development, testing, and scaling of new LEGO elements as well as production processes and molding and packaging technologies. A materials lab, manufacturing center, and training academy for plastic makers and tool makers will refine future specialist capabilities as well. “Kornmarken Campus strengthens the LEGO Group’s foundation for future growth,” says LEGO CEO Niels B Christiansen. “By bringing all aspects of manufacturing innovation together in one location, we can speed up how new ideas move from concept to reality in our global operations network.”
The 237,000-square-foot mass timber construction reduces the overall environmental footprint by locking carbon into the structure, while an existing solar park provides partial power to the complex. Slated for LEED Platinum certification, the facility features a renewable energy supply and onsite rainwater management as well. The Sustainability Play Lab will open onsite later this year, inviting schoolchildren and visitors to learn more about LEGO Group’s journey toward more sustainable materials.
