Spanning the top floor of a midrise new-build in South Bend, Indiana, the office of Lou Hansell touts a refined residential sensibility that defies standard workplace conventions with inherent elegance. Crafted by Chicago-based Harken Interiors (KTGY served as architect), the luxury clothes hanger company’s Indiana outpost reflects its penchant for fashion, its European influences, and brand values of beauty, functionality, and luxury. “While the brand speaks to celebrities—the international jet-set, and the couture fashion industry—the headquarters is based squarely in the Midwest,” says Harken founding partner Jaclyn Moser. “Our goal was to reflect the quality and craftsmanship of the product for the brand partners and clientele who visit from far-reaching parts of the world.”
Comprising a 2,000-square-foot office and a 1,600-square-foot rooftop terrace, the Lou Hansell headquarters features spaces equipped for daily operations as well as areas dedicated to showcasing, photoshoots, and other activations. A full closet installation serves as one of several corners dedicated to hanger displays as well. Artisan touches worthy of such a high-end brand abound throughout the workplace, from custom millwork and bespoke furniture to curated art packages—including an original piece by Bethany Mabee in Hansell’s own office. “Lou’s personal office is more of an artist salon with a lounge, bar, residentially styled bathroom, and direct access to the terrace via a fully openable partition,” Moser adds.
Light herringbone wood floors span interiors generously lit via expansive windows and specialty light fixtures. Soft, neutral seating is accented with colorful complements from earthy carpet patterns to immersive abstract artwork. Spacious desks line the linear workstations beneath gridded ceilings, while comfy furnishings populate living room-style common areas positioned for both work and rest. “Striking a balance between a working showroom and hospitality-driven reception for guests, the design communicates a certain level of panache, meticulous care, and tailored, personal focus that reflects the client experience when working with Lou Hansell,” adds Harken founding partner Chris Sommers.
